FELL TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - Students at the Fell Charter School in Lackawanna County got a special visitor Wednesday afternoon. Miss Pennsylvania stopped by the school with a special request.

Shannon Doyle, 24, was all smiles as she talked with students. Doyle, a Wilkes-Barre native, taught students the importance of community service.

"I think it's really, really cool that she actually got the chance to come here and spend time with our school," 7th grader Katie Bischak said.

The message seemed to sink in. Eighth grader Luis Melgar already wants to do more projects with his church.

"I'm trying to go and do more community service projects like going to senior citizen homes and making cards and making cards for soldiers," Melgar said.

Miss Pennsylvania, who's currently a third year medical student in Philadelphia, also asked the students for help. They're going to help her with her platform, the "wear a smile" campaign. It involves selling bracelets.

"I introduce it to the students and they sell these bracelets and all the money raised will go to benefit children in the hospital," Doyle said.

"I think that's a good idea," Eighth grader John Lichtenstein said.

As for Miss Pennsylvania herself, she's five months into her reign. She's gearing up for the Miss America competition.

"It's a 24-7 job. It's a full-time job but I love every minute of it," Doyle said.
