WEST PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY- The I-team has confirmed there's an investigation into missing money at the West Pittston Police Department.

The investigation began in late summer and involves a police officer in the West Pittston P. D.

Police Chief Paul Porfiro tells Eyewitness News that he uncovered discrepancies within a police account while he was doing a routine audit in late August.

The chief said he could not comment further so as not to jeopardize the ongoing investigation.

He said he called in the Luzerne County District Attorney's office to avoid any possible conflict of interest.

The officer was suspended without pay Thursday as the investigation continues.

We are not releasing the name of the officer until charges are filed agaist him.

The district attorney's office confirmed the probe focuses on money involving the D. A.R. E. program.

That money was supposed to be used for drug and alcohol education programs.

A Luzerne County detective is now working the case.

The borough council is expected to talk about the investigation and suspension at its meeting Thursday night.
