Monroe Co. Absentee Ballots

Monroe Co. Absentee Ballots - Saturday, October 4, 2008 at 2:42PM EST

Saturday, Oct 4, 2008 @ 02:42pm EST

Stroudsburg, Monroe County -

Envelope, after envelope, after envelope, Tammy Martin spends hours with her envelope opener. Tammy is a temporary employee at the Monroe County Voter Registration office. The manager hired her to help with extra work this election season. Her big job Friday is opening absentee ballots and ballot requests.

You can use the absentee ballot if you'll be out of town on Election Day or if you're too sick to make it to the polls. Sara May-Silfee, Director of Voter Registration, says "Or anybody who is elderly and don't feel like they could stand in a line." Voter registration Director Sara May-Silfee tells Eyewitness News she's already processed more absentee ballot requests than ever before. Sara also says, “The last Presidential election they had 4,000 absentee applications. I think we're gonna exceed that."

Suzanne Birmingham, Pocono Lake , thinks she knows why. She's one of the people who requested an absentee ballot. She says, “Every vote counts and it's supposed to be very close."

And the closer the election looks, the busier Tammy and the rest of this office staff will be. Sara mentions, “We're working seven days a week, 14 hours a day."

The deadline to request your absentee ballot is October 28. You have to return your ballot to the voter registration office by October 31.
