Monroe County School Bus Fears

Monroe County School Bus Fears - Friday, March 20, 2009 at 8:20PM EST

Tunkhannock Township, Monroe County -
These parents say their children are being bullied and in some cases sexually harassed on the school bus.

Alicia Siglin, a parent says, "There's some nudity going on. There has been multiple incidents where they threatened the girls with inappropriate actions, sexual actions and how they would do it to them."

Kelly Tompkins, a parent says, "When she started talking about sexual harassment it involved the things they are saying to her and the vulgar gestures they make to her. There are certain words she should not know at this age. She has been acting shy and withdrawn now."

They contacted the I-Team and say officials at the Tobyhanna Elementary Center and the Pocono Mountain school district did not resolve the problems. Their kids range in age from 5-9 and are in K thru fifth grades. They say four boys are the culprits. The problems began at the end of last school year and got worse this year. They sent letters to the district hoping to stop it. The parents say the school is fine. There is no problem inside the school. The issue is only on the way to and from school on the bus.

Will Fisher, another parent says, "I'm not going to put my kids in that situation. I chose to drive mine back and forth everyday."

Eyewitness News went to the school looking for answers. We were told they could not comment and were referred to the district public relations person who said she would look into it. These parents say they have contacted lawyers and will take legal action if necessary.

Pocono Mountain school district faxed a statement to Eyewitness News. It said they're surprised parents contacted us and are doing everything they can to address their concerns. They also said they "Immediately placed a monitor on that bus, and a camera in the rear."
