STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY - Joey the Pitt Bull. Someone found him injured on the side of a road several months ago. The folks at Barton Heights Veterinary Hospital have been taking care of him. "It's heartbreaking," said Veterinary Assistant Jamie Irwin.
Cecilia the cat is also homeless. Someone dumped her in a parking lot. "She's super sweet," said Irwin.
People have been ditching unwanted pets on road sides and veterinary offices all over Monroe County since it's SPCA shelter abruptly closed in January. Veterinarian Jeremy Wentz said, "It's really been a big burden on us."
But now there's hope for animals like Joey and Cecilia. Monroe County's shelter will reopen soon. Irwin exclaimed, "It's awesome!"
Awesome and AWSOM. AWSOM is the name of the group that will run the shelter. The name stands for Animal Welfare Society of Monroe. Wentz said, "Oh it's fantastic!"
The group signed an agreement to lease the empty shelter from the SPCA for a dollar a year for the next three years. Wentz remarked, "I'm ecstatic that the shelter's gonna be open again."
AWSOM hopes to open the new building some time next month. In the meantime the group needs volunteers to help get the place clean and ready for animals. Wentz said, "The more we can help out the animals in the area the better."
AWSOM needs to raise about $50,000 to operate the shelter. It also needs to hire a manager and collect donated food and pet supplies.
