VALLEY TOWNSHIP, MONTOUR COUNTY -- As Boy Scout Troop 37 prepared to leave for a camping trip here, members discovered something terrible.
"We came across the vandalism," said Charley Haney, Boy Scout Master. "I was shocked and I was also sad that human beings would be capable of such an act."
It wasn't just any vandalism -- someone desecrated more than 40 graves at the Mooresburg United Methodist Church Cemetery. The damage is estimated at $5,000.
The vandal or vandals spray painted tombstones with profanity and Nazi symbols. They also knocked over eight stones and trampled American flags. It happened sometime late Friday night or early Saturday morning.
"I don't comprehend why anybody would do such a thing," said Tiffini Scott of Danville. "It's just sickening."
Some of the stones are more than 100 years old. The scouts picked up some of the flags, but didn't want to change much more before police investigate. They hope to come back soon and clean up the rest of the mess.
"We can set the tombstones up and find something that won't destroy the tombstones but clean the vandalism off," said John Esenwein, one of the scouts.
The boys we spoke with hope police catch the vandals soon and punish them.
"I hope that they get caught and that hopefully they realize eventually that what they've done is wrong and they pay for what they've done," said Tyler Seidel, another scout.
Esenwein echoes Seidel's hopes. "I hope they get sent to the slammer."
