ASHLEY, LUZERNE COUNTY- PennDOT made good on a promise to make part of a Luzerne County highway safer. It's a stretch of Route 309 where a fiery crash killed one driver and seriously injured another last month.

PennDOT crews work in the rain along Route 309 northbound. They're cutting rumble strips in the passing lane. All total, crews cut six strips into the highway near the Ashley Borough, Hanover Township line.

The goal is to get drivers to slow down near an intersection that became the scene of tragedy. Craig Lear of Mountain Top was killed in a May 10th crash when an SUV rear-ended his classic car while he waited to turn into Bentley's Plaza.

The following weeks saw PennDOT install digital speed minders and warning signs before work started on the rumble strips.

The latest safety improvements here on this stretch of 309 come more than 3-week after that horrific Mother's Day crash. Drivers we spoke to say they're relieved something's finally being done.

Arlene Hoch of Mountain Top said, "They really need them. We're happy for it."

Al Carlson of Wilkes-Barre added, "I think it's a good thing. Being a security officer and ex-fire police and fireman/EMT, I think it's good.

Bentley's Plaza on Route 309 will hold its grand opening June 20th. Police will watch traffic that night to determine if any other safety changes might be necessary.
