WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY -- 162 senior citizens are being forced out of their homes because of broken elevators in a high-rise apartment building.

It's happening at City Heights Senior Citizen Apartments on North Sherman Street. The Wilkes-Barre Fire Department responded to a small fire in an 11th floor apartment this afternoon. When they arrived they discovered neither elevator in the building worked.

City code enforcement officials were called to look into the violation. City code states that any building over four stories must have at least one working elevator.

Until repairs can be made, all 150 apartments must be evacuated. CEO and the Red Cross have been called in to assist the seniors.
