More Than Time Needed To Regain Public Trust

More Than Time Needed To Regain Public Trust - Monday, January 26, 2009 at 9:15PM EST

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY --Monday's announcements have certainly shaken some people's faith in our judicial system. Consumer reporter Jeff Chirico is live in Wilkes-Barre with more on what the Luzerne County court system needs to do to regain the public's trust.
Not only have these judges defrauded taxpayers they also sent children away who in some cases didn't need to be detained. One political science expert says it will take transparency and time before people believe in the system again.

When Joe Fabian of Nanticoke heard the news Monday afternoon, “I kinda clapped. The courthouse has been stinking for a long time." Fabian says his trust in Luzerne County's judicial system has been damaged. He's not alone and acting president Judge Chester Muroski vows to regain that trust "by acting the way judges should."

“He has a lot of work ahead of him." American government professor at Wilkes University, Tom Baldino says the remaining judges need to be more open. "It would start in my mind, demonstrating that any activities of the judges outside the classroom any and all business interactions are completely disclosed" But Baldino says it will take years to regain the public's trust because this isn't just about defrauding taxpayers -- it's about taking advantage of children. Some were improperly locked up for judge's financial gain.

Baldino says "and the fact that this is the court system that which is theoretically the most important and sacred of branches, this is a dastardly thing to have happen."

But Fabian says he still believes in the system as a whole because of what we learned today. "I'm not glad the bad happened but I'm glad someone had guts to say this is it, you're wrong. So I think the system is healthy.

And now the question a lot of people will be asking. Will Judges Ciavarella and Conohan keep their pensions? It is uncertain right now. We learned today, it's up to State Employees Retirement System to decide. And that won't happen until these judges are sentenced.
