HONESDALE, WAYNE COUNTY- Proponents of a proposed new Catholic-based school in Wayne County say they need the support of more interested families.
The idea for a new independent school came up shortly after the Diocese of Scranton announced plans to close Saint Vincent's Elementary School at the end of the current academic year. Saint Vincents, which has students from Pre-K to eight grade, is the only Catholic School in Wayne County. Parents say students would have to travel over Farview Mountain to Mayfield or Dunmore to reach other schools that maintain a "Catholic base."
Attorney Errol Flynn is Treasure for the group trying to begin the new school. He says it would take approximately $700,000 to run the facility. The group has asked interested families to make a $500 deposit to show their support. Attorney Flynn says some have done so. But not enough. The group has set March 20th as the deadline for deposits.
The group has also asked the Diocese of Scranton for permission to lease the existing Saint Vincent's School Building for at least two years.
Interested families from Wayne and Pike Counties in Pennsylvania and Sullivan County, New York have been asked to attend a planning meeting for the new school tonight (Thursday, March 13th) at 7pm at Falls Port Restaurant in Hawley.
