WAYMART, WAYNE COUNTY- The lives of a mother and her two children were taken Wednesday morning in an apartment fire.
The Wayne County Housing Authority says 28-year-old Michele Basyouni and her sons 11-year-old Daniel Hussey and 6-year-old Zachary Tepetziklis died.
Hussey was a student at Western Wayne Middle School. News of this family’s death was a hard blow to neighbors and emergency crews.
Firefighters sort through what's left of this apartment fire in Waymart. A mother and her two boys died when flames ripped through Wednesday morning.
Dale Miller was inside the apartment building when the fire started and tried to help. “I took the flashlight and tried to get up under the smoke, it was about a foot off the floor. I hollered in and nobody answered," he said.
State police say a pot left on a burning stove started the fire at about 12:30 A. M. at the Gravity Plane Apartments on Carbondale Road.
Not being able to save the family was tough for two veteran firefighters. Waymart Assistant Fire Chief Cliff Jones said, "It's tough on the guys. We train for it but it's difficult when you deal with small children. It's an instinct that just overcomes you and it's tough."
Assistant Chief Darren Lombardi added, "I have never seen anything like this before. It's heartbreaking, disturbed. It's not easy."
Fire crews on the scene say they think the mother and her two boys died from smoke inhalation. An autopsy will be performed late Monday to determine an exact cause.
Four other families were displaced in this fire. Three are being helped by the Red Cross, the fourth is staying with other family.
