Murder Arrest in Northumberland County - Saturday, January 5, 2008 at 11:49PM EST

MOUNT CARMEL, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY - It has been exactly one year since Sherry Wolfgang was killed inside her Mount Carmel home. With family and friends chanting "Justice for Sherry," Steven Wolfgang was led into his arraignment Saturday night in Northumberland County. That is where the 47-year-old was formally charged with killing his wife.

"It's very hard for me and the family. Its very, very hard," family friend Emma Ahrensfield said.

Friends gathered outside the magistrate's office to get a glimpse of Wolfgang. The scene was so tense, the street was blocked off and the area ropped off by police tape.

"I'm just glad that this day finally got here and hopefully justice will be definately served," Ahrensfield said.

State Police say Steven Wolfgang killed his wife by crushing her ribs with his knees after an argument in their Mount Carmel home last January. After the murder, he put her body in a metal military box and dumped it into Mahanoy Creek. Steven Wolfgang originally admitted to the crime, but later recanted. Friends say they always believed the first story.

"I believed him from the beginning on this. He was telling the truth all along about what he did," Ahrensfield said.

Searchers spent weeks looking for Sherry Wolfgang's body by land and air. Her remains washed-up in June and DNA evidence confirmed her identity. With her accused killer now behind bars, friends say the grieving process can now get underway.

"I can imagine whats going through his mind, but he did the crime, he's got to do the time," Ahrensfield said.

Before Saturday night's murder charge, Steven Wolfgang was already locked-up for setting his wife's car on fire. He remains without bars. He has a preliminary hearing set for this coming Friday.
