LONG POND - When the Nascar teams leave Pocono Raceway, the cleaning teams take over the track.
The sun beat down on the piles of garbage at Pocono Raceway. It baked the bags and the bottles all weekend. Then these guys from Nu-Way Cleaning had to find a way to clean it up.
You could smell the garbage truck's heat soaked stench from several yards away.
"You just keep going. Don't let it bother you," said Ed Thomashefsky.
Nu-Way has done the job for more than 15 years. When the Nascar stars speed away, they pick up after them, and their fans.
Garbage truck driver Bill Schrade laughed, "Go a lot slower. Takes longer to get around the track."
It may take them longer to get around than those speedy spring cup drivers but they say the slow, stinky trip is worth the trouble.
"Look around you! You're at a race track," exclaimed Wayne Wilcko.
He and his staff toss ton upon ton of trash.
"Everything is done by hand. Everything is hand picked," he said.
The crews pick up a lot of garbage that you might expect to see after a big event, like bottles and cigarette butts. But there are also some different things, like swimming pools.
So far this year Wayne said he hasn't seen anything too strange. But this is just the beginning of a long smelly process.
The crew won't wrap up work until Wednesday. | |
