Neighbors Want Shamokin Firebug Caught - Monday, March 2, 2009 at 5:21PM EST

Shamokin, Northumberland County-

The Sunday morning fire that damaged three homes in Shamokin has been ruled arson. Now the people who live there want answers.

Investigators say the blaze started just after 3 a. m. Sunday in a vacant house at 127 North Franklin Street. Caution tape still hangs from the buildings devastated by the fire.

Neighbor Justine Sulouff recalled, “Just smoke and flames coming out of the roof- tons of firefighters, just everywhere.”

Robert Evans lives with his wife in the home on the corner of the block.

His place suffered smoke and water damage, but nothing more. For that, he’s grateful.

Evans noted, “I think they really maintained the fire to the effect that that they kept it on that side of the house. It never did get to my side.”

Evans says police and neighbors were kind and helpful as well.

He added that both of the neighboring buildings have been vacant for several years.

Evans believes if the houses had been fixed up and occupied, the fire might never have happened.

“Whoever set that over there, they didn’t care that there was people living on this side of the house. There was a possibility that they were going to take a life,” Evans explained.

Neighbors now fear the possibility of a repeat performance. They hope the firebug is caught quickly.

Sulouff said, “People that can start fires deliberately just disgust me. Obviously they have no regard for other people.”

Evidence from the fire scene is being sent to a crime lab in Harrisburg for further testing.

Fire officials say the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on the blaze is urged to contact the Shamokin Police Department at 648-5708.
