MAYFIELD, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - A project five years in the making giving Mayfield a new recreation complex is now under way. Volunteers began moving dirt at what is being called the Mayfield Athletic Complex, which in the short run will sport a baseball field for the Mayfield Little League. In the long run, it will also include a softball field, picnic tables, and walking trails. Construction started in early August. Residents began searching for a site and funding to build the complex five years ago, as Mayfield Little League began searching for a permanent home. The property is located on the outskirts of the Mayfield Heights development. They're also talking with state Rep. Ed Staback and state Sen. Bob Mellow, who were helpful in landing an initial grant of $48,000, which is being used for the first baseball diamond. The borough has also submitted a request for a $35,000 grant to install playground equipment on the 19-acre site. Almost all the work, including even the engineering work and bulldozer has been donated by residents.
