DELAWARE WATER GAP, MONROE COUNTY - There's now more help than ever for domestic violence victims in the Poconos. Womens Resources of Monroe County is moving into a new and expanded crisis center. Eyewitness news took a tour of the Frances Hughes Crisis Counseling Center Thursday.
Volunteers helped the Womens Resources staff move into the new building. Executive Director Jennifer Grube said, "We are so excited. Today is a true blessing in this time of thanks." She told Eyewitness News Monroe County desperately needed the new place. She explained, "We saw an increase of folks who were needing crisis counseling and also sheltering services."
Crisis counselors have been working out of cramped trailers for the past two years. Grube frowned, "Unfortunately we've had to turn away folks who are in need of services."
Counselor Georgia Archer said the new space is more private than the trailers and it will make victims feel more comfortable. She explained, "I think it helps with your thinking process when it's not - you know - so much jumbled stuff all around."
The place also has a high tech security system to keep victims safe and a healing room for child victims.
The building cost more than a million dollars. Grants and donations paid for it. The staff says it is money well spent to serve domestic violence victims.
The building project took two years. Now Womens Resources will focus on renovating a shelter. Managers say they will need all the community support they can get for that project. | | |
