Williamsport, Lycoming County-
New details are emerging about a fatal early morning fire that claimed the life of a woman from Williamsport.
We now know 57-year-old Linda Mayer was the woman killed in the fire Thursday on Germania Street. And neighbors say she was as sweet as could be.
Annette Eiswert, of Williamsport, said, “She was a very, very nice lady. (She) talked to everybody, very nice lady. I know her children. I mean we all grew up the same age bracket. It’s a shame. My condolences go to her family.”
It was just before 5 Thursday morning when Eiswert awoke to the sound of fire engines.
She noted, “I was looking all around, because we have some elderly people on the block, and I looked out back and I saw a flicker. And I saw her house completely engulfed in flames.”
It’s believed Mayer was found on a couch in a room on the first floor of the house, where she would commonly sleep through the night.
Firefighters say the two-alarm blaze was tough to fight. The wood-plank house burned quickly and live electrical wires had fallen around the building.
They believe an electrical failure inside the house is to blame for the fatal fire.
Eiswert added, “It was just burning really, really bad. There were flames coming out of the front, the back. I mean it was totally a fireball.”
Fire officials tell us the house is a total loss. They say there were no working smoke detectors inside. | |
