SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY -- Drivers know that sometimes it is extremely hard to find a parking spot in Scranton. The new garage has a total of 233 spots and it will be open around the clock.
After more than a year of construction work and waiting, drivers finally got a chance to use Scranton's newest parking garage Monday morning. The 11-million dollar facility on North Washington Avenue opened just after 7:00 A. M.
Karen Yerg of Olyphant said, “Our office is a half-block away. It’s convenient and close.”
The biggest thing about the new garage that people will notice is there is no attendant. Instead the garage uses an automated ticketing system.
Officials hope the new facility alleviates a parking crunch in Scranton and gets more people to shop downtown.
Rita King from Olyphant said, “It’s very convenient to have parking so close so this is a great opportunity."
The new garage replaces the old Oppenheim parking garage which wasn't as big.
Drivers seem happy with the new garage because it’s so big, clean and convenient. Jeff Decker of Clarks Summit added, “It’s closest to my work here so I figured I'd give it a shot."
In addition to the parking spaces the garage also has commercial space on the ground floor. The city is working to get a steakhouse in that spot. | |
