HANOVER TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY- A Hanover Township neighborhood is caught in between two death investigations. A murder, with dismembered remains discovered yesterday, and a suicide, where the victim was found Thursday night.

Sources say the cases are closely related and there's more new information. John O'Brien was apparently murdered months ago. His remains were found dumped in a ravine Thursday.

And John Ryan's body was located inside his home Thursday night. He had shot himself.

Police want unsettled neighbors to know their case is moving quickly. They say they're covering a lot of ground and that all parties related to these two death investigations are accounted for. But still, residents are on edge.

Two bodies found in as many days, and only yards apart. School children and neighbors are caught in the middle of two grizzly investigations.

Hanover Township resident Shannon Okraszewski said, “We just saw the police officers and heard about someone found in a bag.”

That was Thursday when officers pulled dismembered remains out of a ditch. Investigators say it was 51-year-old John O'Brien. They say he was shot once and believe he's been dead since January. O'Brien's family gave us a picture three months ago, shortly after he disappeared.

Ironically, hours after O'Brien was discovered, authorities say a man he was in a relationship with, 38-year-old John Ryan was found dead inside 11 Loxley Lane. Luzerne County D. A. Jackie Musto Carroll said, “The cause and manner of death of Mr. Ryan was a suicide, a self-inflicted wound.”

Detectives say Ryan turned a gun on himself Thursday afternoon. The D. A. says linking the two cases would be speculation. They're not doing it at this point. “We have identified these people. We believe it's an isolated incident with just these two and no one else involved,” added Musto Carroll.
