SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - Several memorial day services took on special meaning Monday in Lackawanna County.

From Dickson City to Dunmore to Scranton, people paused to honor those soldiers who have given the ultimate sacrifice.

In Dunmore, a service to honor Civil War soldiers marked a new milestone, taking place for 110 years.

The sounds of a rifle salute brought people to attention at the event which took place at Dunmore Cemetery. People also laid wreaths in honor of our nation's oldest soldiers.

"If we don't remember our past, we can't do much for our future. If we don't remember those who sacrificed their lives and fortunes and so much else to preserve this country, then what was it all for?" Ray Sulger said.

With the sound of patriotic music, many who are from military families became overwhelmed with emotion at the service.

"My grandfathers, my grand-uncles, all served. I served. My children are gonna serve. One is serving now," Bob Hogan of Dunmore said.

In Dickson City, hundreds took to the streets for a parade and then came together for a short service outside the borough building. Many boy scouts and young kids turned out for the services.

"I think that its very important for the kids to know because it's their heritage," Robin Youngblood of Throop said.

At Nay Aug Park in Scranton, hundreds of other people came together to raise the American flag and honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

"The war that we're in today is no a war that's just on television," Scranton mayor Chris Doherty said.

This year, special honor was paid to Lance Corporal Larry Johnson. A moment of silence was held for the 19-year-old who died this past February in Afghanistan.

"It's very important to remember the sacrifices of those that have gone before us and those that will lose their lives in battle -- but most important -- it's a true reminder of the sacrifices and prices that are paid for our freedom," Captain James Minicozzi said.
