New Retail Store Coming to Wilkes-Barre

New Retail Store Coming to Wilkes-Barre - Friday, May 2, 2008 at 4:19PM EST

(WILKES-BARRE, Luzerne County)

There will soon be another place to shop in Wilkes-Barre. And it's a place that will likely attract the rich, the poor and everyone in between. Giving people and merchandise a second chance.

That's the theme of a new Volunteers Of America family thrift store. It'll open here in the Penn Plaza, inside the old Bi-Lo building July first.

Joyce Gilbert lives in Wilkes-Barre Township, "I think it's a good idea, especially with the economy being the way it is. I think a lot more people will use it than they had in the past." For the past few years, the 26,000 square foot facility has sat empty. Soon, it'll house gently used clothing, furniture, household items and more.

Many say they're sold on this new shopping option. Hugh Jones lives in Wilkes-Barre, "I've shopped in the past at thrift stores. Always good buys at thrift stores." Gilbert added, "I think it's a good idea. It's been vacant for a long time. A lot better especially for the downtown." The place has plenty of parking and a lot of extra room inside for donation drop-offs too. Revenue here will support different Volunteer Of America missions.

Bill Jones is the Vice President of Volunteers Of America, "When people see how nice and clean and neat this will be. It will have shoppers of all income levels want to find bargains here." Bargains brought to an area in need. Chip Weiss will manage the new thrift store.

Weiss told WBRE News, "I think South Wilkes-Barre is a viable part of town. It's a great location. Happy with the opportunity to be here. It's main street." And it's main purpose will be to serve this community. The Volunteers Of America will invest $150,000.00 dollars into the new store.

By the way, Volunteers Of America will soon hold it's fifth annual celebrity benefit dinner on May 15th at 7 p. m. A silent auction begins at 5:30 in the afternoon. The event will feature Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid and WBRE’s Phil Schoener as emcee.
