Montoursville, Lycoming County-

In central Pennsylvania, PPL’s line crews are going high tech.

PPL Foreman John Todor makes a few clicks and keystrokes on the new computer in his truck, and he’s got instant access to a wealth of useful information.

Information that PPL hopes will make long, drawn-out power outages a thing of the past.

Todor noted, “No one wants to be without power. This is another tool that the company has to help our linemen respond quicker and get people back in service quicker.”

The tool is known as M. O.M., the Mobile Operations Management system. The software can pinpoint a power outage, locate the nearest available crew, and even give directions.

The new technology means no more relying on dispatchers for directions or fumbling with hard-to-read maps while crews are out on a repair job.

Todor said, “It’s much quicker, much simpler for everybody especially in a storm situation. Very little radio traffic will go on with the M. O.M. system.”

The M. O.M. system has been installed on about 500 PPL trucks in all, 30 of them at the Susquehanna Service Center site near Montoursville.

Total cost for the project? About $10 million.

PPL officials say it’s worth the price to guarantee customer satisfaction.

Todor explained, “Two things customers want to know. What caused my outage and how long am I going to be out? And this helps us get to it, repair it quicker, and make everybody happy.”

And we’re told the new system has been embraced by the line crews who’ve been working with it for the past six months.

Todor added, “It can only get better for us. I think it’s here to stay definitely. We’re in the 21st century now with the computers and the sky’s the limit.”

The Mobile Operations Management system is controlled from PPL’s headquarters in Allentown.
