New YMCA Opens in Schuylkill County
New YMCA Opens in Schuylkill County - Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 10:29PM EST
POTTSVILLE, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY-It's been over 40 years since Schuylkill County has had a full service Y-M-C-A.
But Wednesday night the doors opened on Centre Street in Pottsville.
The new "Y" welcomed the public during it's annual fund raising dinner.
The old army national guard building has been remodeled.
It has a gym, teen video "tech" room, fitness center and even a lounge.. with after school activities.
But Y-M-C-A Officals say it took a lot of work and some help from the late Senator James Rhodes to make this center a reality.
Wayne Stump is the Executive Director of the Schuylkill YMCA
" The YMCA was chartered in 1997 for the past 10 -12 years we haven't had a building. 2 years ago we gained access to the Army National Guard and right after that we received a grant from Senator Rhodes for $600,000 between that we are able to have this facility here. "
All funds raised at Wednesday night's dinner and auction will go towards the financial aid program.
It offers assistance to people who need help with membership costs. | |
