HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY -- This first weekend of the new year is the last chapter in the history of a Luzerne County church.
The final mass was held Sunday afternoon at Holy Trinity Slovak Church in Hazleton. The congregation gathered one last time in this 102-year-old house of worship.
Holy Trinity Slovak was forced to close under the Diocese of Scranton consolidation plan.
Parishioners are dealing with a sense of loss at a place from which they drew such comfort. Ray Marusak said, "We're all heart broken. Our family's history is here. It's been wonderful pastors through the years that we're here. People had their dedications. They had a monument just removed. Somebody took it already."
Holy Trinity Slovak Church is now merged with St. Joseph's in Hazleton. The combined congregations will be called Sts. Cyrus and Methodius Parish. | |
