New Year's Polar Bear Ride
New Year's Polar Bear Ride - Thursday, January 1, 2009 at 7:22PM EST
Lewisburg, Union County-
A group of Christian motorcycle enthusiasts geared up and rode Thursday morning to support one of their own.
For more than a decade, the Lord’s Disciples chapter of the Christian Motorcyclists’ Association has met on the first day of the new year.
Each time, they raise money and provide support for someone in the community who truly needs it.
For 2009, they chose to honor Carol Flory, the group’s longtime secretary, who is battling cancer.
Lenora Springfield, of Shamokin Dam, said, “During this time we’ve been there to support her, but she’s always been there to support us as a chapter too. She’s just a great person, always willing to help another person.”
And while the bitter temperature kept some bikes from starting, it didn’t keep anyone away from supporting this worthwhile cause.
Carol Flory says support like this from her friends, as well as her husband Bob, is priceless.
She noted, “If you need somebody to talk to, all you have to do is call somebody, and they’re there for you.”
Carol underwent two surgeries and several rounds of chemotherapy in 2008. But she refuses to let it drag her down.
She explained, “Each day when I get up, I take a day at a time, and each day lets me get a little stronger.”
Carol says family and faith keep her going.
She added, “I want to be here to see my two little granddaughters grow up and get out of high school and college and get married. So if I have that I’ll be very happy. Plus I want to spend more years with (Bob).”
About 50 people braved the bitter cold for this year’s Polar Bear Ride- quite a show of strength for a woman who clearly demonstrates plenty of it.
Carol says she hopes to eventually return to her job at Sunbury Textile Mills, where she’s been employed for more than 30 years. | |
