New safety measures after deadly crash

New safety measures after deadly crash - Friday, May 15, 2009 at 6:20PM EST

Friday, May 15, 2009 @ 06:20pm EST

Safety improvements will be added to a stretch of route 309 in Luzerne county. PENNdot, state and local lawmakers made this announcement Friday.

The additions come after a two car accident on May 10th that killed Craig Lear of Mountaintop

Lear was turning into Bentley's Plaza off route 309, when he was rear-ended by an suv.

The safety additions include rumble strips on the pavement, new signs to warn drivers and digital speed limit signs to show you how fast driving on route 309.

PENNdot assistant district executive for maintenance Dennis Giordano says, "I am confident that we can make this a much better situation."

PENNdot says digital speed limit signs and message boards will be in place by memorial day.

Rumble strips and road signs will be placed by July 1st.

It's all an effort to prevent another accident.

State representative John Yudichak says, "Our hearts go out to the Lear family and all the families that are involved in this."

State lawmakers like Yudichak and Eddie Day Pashinski joined PENNdot's announcement Friday.

Pashinski says, "This is also a lesson for people driving that they need to focus on the road and they need to follow the 45 mile an hour speed limit."

Both say Bentley's plaza is a huge investment for Luzerne county.

Everyone at this meeting wants to make sure customers arrive safe.

Ashley police chief David Cerski says the borough will be at Bentley's June 20th grand opening and then, "Study the traffic that night and maybe we'll have more ideas for PENNdot and the owners after that event."

Ideas like a possible left hand turn lane or traffic light.

If a traffic light or turn lane is placed at the turn, a PENNdot study needs to take place first.

Ashley borough, PENNdot and Bentley's management will meet soon to decide when that study will start.
