New trends in seasonal work hiring

New trends in seasonal work hiring - Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at 6:10PM EST

Tuesday, Dec 8, 2009 @ 06:10pm EST

One in eight employed workers plan to take on a seasonal job this year.

That's according to a Careerbuilder. com survey.

The rough economy is changing how companies decide who to hire this holiday season.

The check out lines are getting busy at Target in Wilkes-Barre Township .

As the holidays approach, more people are heading to stores and stores are hiring more workers.

Sybil Harris is a Target seasonal employee.

She said, "We have a lot of customers and the seasonal hire is really nice. Hopefully I get hired permanently after this."

Harris is one of several seasonal workers hired by target to work from the end of September through the Christmas holiday.

Target human resources director Erin Carden said this year's seasonal work crew is different from years past.

"This year we've had more applicants than we've been able to interview," said Carden.

Seasonal workers are much more qualified than before here at Target.

That's a national trend as well.

Target says it could be a sign of the rough economy.

An increase of qualified people applying for seasonal jobs could mean those people may have lost their job or are looking for a second source of income.

No matter who's hired, Target says the work is needed.

Carden said, "It gets extremely busy extremely quickly so that's why we have to hire on a tremendous amount of people quickly. We get them trained, onboard, ready to serve our guests. That is a big workload for us. It's a very, very busy time of the year."

According to one national survey, companies across the country are expecting a surge in season worker applications.

Snagajob. com says more than half of companies that hire seasonal workers will get more applications.

Luzerne County 's Careerlink tells Eyewitness News Amazon and UPS are also hiring seasonal workers in our area.
