No Campaign Gear at the Polls

No Campaign Gear at the Polls - Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at 5:20PM EST

Danville, Montour County-

In several areas around the Commonwealth, voters were told to leave the campaign apparel at home. It's in an effort to enforce a state law already on the books.

It was a huge voter turnout here in Montour County. The historic election brought people to the polls in droves.

Election inspector Jack Schneider explained, "New voters. A lot of new voters that we haven't had in the past have come in. That's been exciting, the younger voters."

Noticeably absent, however, were the usual campaign buttons, hats, and t-shirts- both indoors and out. They've been allowed at many polling locations in the past, but no longer.

County officials say they're just following state law, which prohibits the practice of campaigning inside polling places. And, they add, they haven’t had any problems with the rules.

People we spoke with say it's hard to balance freedom of expression with the need to provide a pressure-free voting location.

Rob Nedoff was out to vote today in Mahoning Township. He noted, "It's gotten a little hectic and a little crazy and I think there is something to be said for being able to go into the polls and cast your vote without being hassled."

But everyone agreed the most important issue is making sure all eligible voters have their voices heard.

Nedoff said, "A lot of people are doing a lot of complaining. A lot of people are not happy about the way things are going from either party. And so the only way to really remedy that is to be able to get out there and cast your vote."

Schneider added, "I think only time will tell. The next four years are going to be something else."
