No Public Comment In Duryea - Thursday, January 17, 2008 at 10:19PM EST

DURYEA, LUZERNE COUNTY- "Nobody's going to suppress my freedom of speech." Lorraine Capitano confronted several borough leaders following a closed door session that was preceded by a "quick" council meeting held specifically for the purpose of accepting a resignation.

"The people are elected and should work for the people of this town," Capitano said.

A handful of residents said they had questions for leaders but were unable to ask them.

Council had scheduled this special meeting for the purpose of accepting the resignation of Charles Guarnieri, exiting police chief who will now work for the Luzerne County Sheriff's Department. While the outbound chief wasn't at the meeting, residents were and they wanted to speak about a range of issues.

The borough's solicitor defended the decision to limit proceedings to business-only with no comment period. Most municipalities allow pubic comment at any public meeting. Attorney Don Frederickson said "it was a special meeting and there wasn't much in the way of views (as related to the agenda)."

Taxpayers, like Capitano, disagreed with that assessment.
