STROUDSBURG - Construction workers are building wider curbs to make is safer to walk through downtown Stroudsburg. But some people say it's actually making the street more dangerous.

"It would have been nice if there was somebody there to help me across the street," said a woman named Nicole who did not want to share her last name.

Walkers squeeze between construction areas and traffic. It's dangerous and it's illegal.

The problem is, most people don't even realize they did anything wrong.

The Borough Manager recently asked police to give more tickets for illegal walking but officers said they can't ticket everyone. So instead they are patrolling more and telling people the right way to cross.

Before the project started you could get to a corner business simply by crossing one street. Now you have to cross three streets.

"I walk two and a half blocks out of my way to cross at Sixth Street," complained Bobbie Marsh. She owns a business in town and said the borough didn't plan the project well.

"There's no shoppers. There's no diners. There's none of the usual people that should be on Main Street," she said.

But Borough officials believe while it may be inconvenient now, it will be worth it to have a safer downtown in the long run.

Workers expect to finish the project by October. Until then the borough asks drivers and walkers to take their time and be careful when using the streets and sidewalks.
