Obama and Clinton Eyeing Wilkes-Barre - Friday, March 14, 2008 at 4:51PM EST

First, a high profile visit to Scranton by Hillary Clinton last week. Now a Barack Obama visit is confirmed. But Scranton is not the only local city these two democratic presidential candidates are targeting. Signs are pointing to Wilkes-Barre as a future campaign stop for both candidates.

A lot of voters here have been asking, 'What about Wilkes-Barre?' One candidate has set up a campaign office in the heart of downtown, the other is coming soon.

Stacks of chairs are rolled into the Wilkes-Barre Barack Obama campaign headquarters. It's grand opening is Sunday, but volunteers like Thelma Jones are already signing up. "Because I figured they might need help, and I'm here to do as much as I can," she said.

Jones is one of more than a dozen volunteers offering up help, since the office moved into 41 South Main Street this week. Jones says, "Because I believe in Obama and I think it's really a good time for a change."

People can register to vote at the new headquarters. Some did Friday afternoon. Volunteers say Wilkes-Barre is an important city for Obama's Pennsylvania campaign. Barack Obama volunteer Natalie Asikainen says, "I think it's really important to have this office here in Wilkes-Barre because we do have a large amount of people that want some change in the white house."

And senator Hillary Clinton is preparing to target Wilkes-Barre as well. A spokesman for Hillary Clinton's campaign there are plans to open a Wilkes-Barre office by the end of this month, but a specific location hasn't been set in stone. The Clinton campaign says a Wilkes-Barre visit will absolutely happen before the April 22nd primary.

Volunteers for the Obama campaign are confident he will visit the Diamond City as well. No dates have been set for both visits, but it's clear both candidates are setting up, and getting ready for an extremely important primary.

Barack Obama is scheduled to visit Scranton Monday. The Senator will speak at the Society of Irish Women dinner at the Radisson at Lackawanna Station Hotel Monday night at 7. No word yet if there will be an event open to the public.
