Olyphant Seeks Solution To Flooding - Friday, October 12, 2007 at 2:45PM EST

OLYPHANT, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- Borough workers in Olyphant are dealing with some flooding issues. They were called out shortly before Noon Friday to begin construction of a temporary roadway leading to a flooded neighborhood in the Consburg section of the community.

More than 50 homes were cut off from the rest of the community after flooding from heavy rain closed the only existing street into the neighborhood. An ATV had to be used to transport a nurse to a homebound patient in that area.

Neighbors say the periodic flooding problems started after the State Department of Environmental Protection began a project to channel stream water away from old mine working in that section of the community.

The D.E.P. brought in three pumps over the past few months to try to control flooding during high water periods. But a spokesman for the agency says the estimated three inches of rain that fell in the borough was just too much for the units to handle in a short period of time.

The first phase of the project is to divert creek water and is expected to be complete by the end of this month. The D.E.P. believes the completion of that work should ease flooding problems in the neighborhood.
