WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- A grassroots campaign designed to honor Vietnam Veterans suffering from the affects of Agent Orange.
It’s called "The Order of the Silver Rose".
Local Vietnam Veteran Gary Steele of Larksville is a member of the group and now urging others in our area to be a part of it.
Steele fought for more than a year in Vietnam, dodging gunfire, and risking his life.
He came back safe, but wasn't the same.
By 2004, he developed cancer, and his doctor knew the cause."You listen to the doctor come in, and he takes one look at you and says it's 100 percent Agent Orange. In microseconds, what goes through your mind was i a good man in life? Was i good to my family?"
Steele found strength to beat the disease, and now is in special company.
He's one of nearly 45 hundred Vietnam Vets nationwide that are members of "The Order of the Silver Rose"
Those involved receive a medal and the support they need to fight the effects of Agent Orange. For more information on the Order of the Silver Rose:
