SNYDERSVILLE, MONROE COUNTY - John Nuzzo wasn't sure his family could afford his eye exam. His father lost his health inusrance six months ago. He said, "He lost his job and then we were going through troubled times because - like - he was laid off and we weren't getting any money coming in."
But the Nuzzo family discovered the Center for Vision Loss in Snydersville. it's one of only a few places that accepts Medical Assistance for eye care.
Coordinater Cindi Starner said, "I can't tell you how many calls a day we get from people that cannot afford to see an eye doctor." Many of those people don't have any insurance at all, not even medical assistance. Starner explained, "It's just a growing need in this county with so many people out of work."
But now there is more help for the uninsured. The Blue Ribbon Foundation of Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania gave the place a $7,500 grant. That will help about 100 uninsured people. The grant money will pay for the doctor's visit but it won't cover glasses or contacts. However there are organizations that can help you with those. "I want to say a huge 'thank you,'" smiled Starner.
Doctor Kristen Roseman works at the center for a reduced fee. She's glad she'll now be able to help even more. She said, "You only get one pair of eyes and I think it's important that everyone have access to health care."
To use the center you must demonstrate financial need. To make an appointment call 570-992-7787. | |
