EDWARDSVILLE - LUZERNE COUNTY
More than a dozen people are without a home today after fire destroyed 61 - 71 Lawrence Street in Edwardsville, Luzerne County. Fire chief Ray King of Edwardsville said the fire broke out around midnight. Chief King adds that because of where the fire began, & how it "burnt so fast", his initial thoughts were that the fire was suspicious. Eyewitnesses reportedly heard some sort of explosions or loud bangs as the fire began. The structure was a "row home" with 6 units. 4 of the 6 units were occupied at the time of the fire - everyone got out without injury. More than a dozen people are now without a home - including, 3 families, & one individual. The victims have been placed at area hotels by the American Red Cross. Firefighters told us that despite huge flames shooting from the home, they were able to bring the fire under control in about an hour. However, crews remain on scene watching for any hot spots. Lawrence Street in Edwardsville remains closed. A fire marshall will inspect the structure this morning to determine the cause of the fire. We'll have the latest on WBRE Eyewitness News today at 11 AM, & tonight starting at 5 PM. | |
