PPL Working to Restore Power to Tens of Thousands

PPL Working to Restore Power to Tens of Thousands - Sunday, December 16, 2007 at 1:20PM EST

Reported by: WBRE News

The weight of ice and wind gusts near 50mph were too much for many trees and power lines in our region. Nearly 100,000 customers lost power at some point in the storm, with 70,000 still in the dark and cold this afternoon.

PPL says they have crews working to restore power all over the region but there is no word on when power will be fully restored.

The hardest hit areas were Honesdale, Hazleton, Scranton and Carbondale. In Honesdale, power has been mainly restored. Power is slowly being restored to customers in Scranton and Hazleton, but more than 6,000 are still without electricity in the Carbondale area.

Outages in the Mountain Top area have contributed to the loss of television broadcast signals for many local stations. The collapse of a broadcast tower is also hampering efforts to restore television service.
