EDWARDSVILLE, LUZERNE COUNTY- Parents and children in part of Luzerne County are on high alert. Police are still looking for the man who tried to kidnap a 10-year-old girl Tuesday. The abduction attempt happened as the little girl walked to school in Edwardsville. Police say they have several solid leads.

Meanwhile parents and the school district were not taking any chances Wednesday. A police cruiser was parked at the State Street Elementary School in Larksville all day Wednesday. And investigators search for the man who tried to kidnap a 10-year-old girl. It happened near Church and Price Streets in Edwardsville.

The man tried to take the girl. She was able to get away. He did grab the little girl’s coat and school project. Eyewitness News was there later in the day Tuesday when a neighbor saw a man, possibly the suspect, shoving the coat into a sewer drain in that same area. He pulled it out and gave it to police.

Wednesday parents kept their kids close as school officials took steps to get the word out. Superintendent Dr. Mike Garzella and Principal Erin Keating say they are taking steps to reassure parents and kids. "I think it raises everyone's awareness and I think that parents know and will be diligent," said Garzella.

"I really have to commend my faculty. They have addressed the situation, talked about safety, the buddy system, child safety protocol that takes place everyday in the classroom. And I want to commend parents. They really came out today after the warning was sent out yesterday," added Keating.

Eyewitness News was there as the 10-year-old girl and her parents left State Street Elementary School in Larksville Wednesday. They did not want to appear on camera but the father did say he wants all parents to learn from this and keep a close eye on their children.

Mark, who’s a parent of a kindergartener, said, “She really doesn't know what’s going on. She's only in Kindergarten. We need to talk to her every day about it. She said, ‘Dad, you already told me about strangers.’ Listen I'm going to tell you again, make you’re aware of it."

Parent Ed McGrady said, "I’m not surprised, especially around here lately, the things going on… Nothing surprises me, it’s like Philadelphia."

Again police are working several leads. They won't say they have a "suspect" but the case is moving in the right direction.
