WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- As the one year anniversary of an illegal immigrant's death approaches, organizers of a peace vigil say it sets a much-needed tone.
The vigil was held in Wilkes-Barre, even though the beating death of Luis Ramirez happened in Shenandoah, about 45 miles away. Interfaith groups prayed for Ramirez and the family he left behind.
Ramirez was kicked and punched last July after an altercation with a largely white crowd. He died days later in a hospital.
Rev. Ann Marie Acacio of the Wyoming Valley Interfaith Council said, "In our community, there is no place for hatred, and bigotry and prejudice. And we stand in solidarity with our Spanish-speaking friends, with individuals from all cultures, all faiths."
Two of Ramirez' accused attackers were acquitted of the most serious charges in his death. Two others were charged with federal crimes.
Governor Rendell has called on the attorney general to investigate the claim that race crimes were committed against Ramirez. | |
