Williamsport, Lycoming County-

An early morning fire in central Pennsylvania is being treated as a crime scene. The blaze started just after 3AM Wednesday in Williamsport’s Newberry section.

Penn College student James Centini says he was lucky to escape alive. Fire destroyed a house he rented along with three other students here.

Centini awoke early Wednesday morning choking from the thick smoke billowing through the apartment.

“Smelled like burning plastic. I just ducked, closed my eyes, held my breath, and ran outside as fast as i could,” he recalled.

James Centini was the only roommate home when the fire started. He credits a smoke alarm in the building with saving his life.

He added, “You never think it’s going to happen to you, you know? I’m that kind of guy, I watch it on TV. If I see someone’s house burned down, it’s never going to happen to me. Think twice, it saved my life.”

Investigators are treating this as a crime scene.

They believe three separate fires were started on the property- one on the back porch, one on the front porch, and one a nearby car. It’s owned by one of the tenants.

Neighbor Gloria Noss explained, “I woke up a little after three, and looked out my kitchen window, and the whole back of the house was just engulfed in flames.”

One firefighter suffered minor injures after falling from the roof. Damage to the house is estimated at over $50,000.

Noss noted, “They got here, they got it under control, and they did a great job.”

A trained dog was brought in to sniff for accelerants. Samples taken from the fire scene are being sent away for further testing.

And the four students who lived here are now searching for a new place to stay.

Investigators have not officially ruled on the cause of Wednesday morning’s blaze. We will keep you updated as we learn more.
