Penn State Fans Deal with Parking Problems

Penn State Fans Deal with Parking Problems - Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 10:55PM EST

STATE COLLEGE, CENTRE COUNTY - Surreal. That's the only way to describe what it looked like outside Beaver Stadium in State College Saturday afternoon.

Areas that would usually be packed with tens of thousands of fans were virtual ghost towns.

Snow earlier this week forced the university to close the grass parking lots. That took away 20,000 parking spots. As a result, tailgating was banned.

Its something that affected everyone, including Coach Joe Paterno. He addressed the issue at a press conference after the game.

"One of my nieces came up from Harrisburg and they stopped at the WalMart for something. She said they were tailgating at the WalMart and the university was busing them in," Paterno said.

Students threw snowballs at each other inside the stadium.

More than six inches of snow fell in State College on Thursday.

It was 37 degrees at kickoff Saturday. That's the coldest on record for a homecoming at Penn State. The blue and white faithful still showed up anyway, bundled up in winter coats and hats.

"I think that is a tribute to the fans and their loyalty and spirit. I know the kids appreciate it. I thought the crowd was good," Paterno said.
