WASHINGTON, DC -- Pennsylvania Congressman John Murtha has died. The Democrat died at a northern Virginia hospital from complications after gallbladder surgery.

Murtha served as a Marine in Vietnam before entering congress, earning a bronze star and two purple hearts. He was the first Vietnam vet elected to congress.

Murtha served as the representative for Pennsylvania's 12th District for 36 years. He was 77.
