WILKES-BARRE -- Teachers, lawmakers, and state workers could receive an increase in pension benefits up to as much as 25% under a measure going before the Pennsylvania House for a vote.
Supporters say there hasn't been an increase in six years and a cost of living increase is needed.
The last cost of living increase was in 2002 one year after the passage of the so called "pension grab bill" of 2001 that bumped up benefits 25% for most workers and 50% for most state lawmakers.
Critics say that means some retirees will receive over a 50% increase in benefits in six years, they claim that's too much. The Pennsylvania School Boards Association is speaking out against the measure saying there is a likelihood of taxes being raised if it's passed.
Do retired state workers, teachers, and lawmakers deserve an increase? In these times of high gas and food prises can property owners risk a tax increase? WYOU Interactive discusses these issues and more with Timothy Allwein from the Pennsylvania School Boards Association and Wythe Keever of the Pennsylvania State Education Association. | |
