An influx of dogs to one local SPCA means there’s a greater demand for pet adoptions than ever before.

It’s getting pretty crowded in the hallways of the Lycoming County SPCA. Dogs of all varieties are quickly filling up the few open kennels left.

Tough economic times combined with new state regulations on breeding practices have convinced many breeders to put their pups up for adoption.

Lycoming County SPCA Executive Director Vicki Stryker reviewed some of the new regulations.

“They have to pay attention to the heating and cooling of the kennel itself. They dogs have to be exercised. They have to get outdoors. And they have to be in pens that are large enough for them to move around in,” she explained.

More than 20 dogs were dropped off late last week, and spring is already a busy time for SPCA workers. The number of stray dogs is at its highest this time of year.

Stryker noted, “We’re already pretty much full. And then to add the burden of 20-30 dogs at a time really can overwhelm us quickly.”

The breeder that brought the dogs in has dozens more. And that means plenty of pooches are going to need a good home.

SPCA officials say now is the time for anyone who’s been thinking about adopting.

Stryker added, “You don’t have to stand outside in the freezing cold trying to get the dog to go potty for you. So it’s a good time. The kids will be home from school. They can help with all the chores with the animal.”
