Pets Recovering From Explosion

Pets Recovering From Explosion - Friday, April 17, 2009 at 2:06PM EST

MONROE COUNTY - Several pets are recovering from an explosion and fire in Carbon Count y last month. It happened at a kennel that bred show Chow dogs. The breeder takes the victim's to Creature Comforts Veterinary Service in Saylorsburg several times a week. Eyewitness News met her, and some new additions to her family, there.
Five pups, just five days old, could change Karen Tracy's future. She said, "It's a renewal and to me it's a miracle that they were even born at all, that they were healthy."

Karen owns the Pazzazz Pet Boarding Kennel in Carbon County. The kennel exploded during a propane delivery there last month. Eighteen dogs died. Eleven dogs survived. One of them was pregnant. The mother recovered and gave birth on the day that represents renewal, Easter Sunday. "To have healthy puppies born on Easter, that was very special," said Karen.

In addition to celebrating the new births, Karen is also happy the injured dogs are recovering well. A Chow named Cyrus gets laser treatments for his burns three times a week. Doctor Karin Susan-Breitlauch at creature comforts said he is recovering about twice as fast as expected. Just a month ago his foot bads and skin were charred. Today, he walked comfortably. The doctor said, "He was getting antibiotics, pain medicine, and he got laser therapy for his burns and he's doing fabulous."

Karen thanks the community for helping her pay thousands of dollars in vet bills. She said, "I don't know where I would have gotten money for vet bills if it wouldn't have been for donations." She ho9pes to eventually re open her kennel and get back to breeding, with the help of five little puppies.

You can make donations to Karen at:

Eyewitness News tried to contact the propane truck driver to see how he is recovering. Timothy Kleinhagen did not return calls for comment.
