Pittston Businessman Tied to Corruption Probe Stays in Jail - Monday, October 5, 2009 at 6:05PM EST

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY -- He's the first to see the inside of a jail cell. A Pittston City businessman with ties to the federal corruption probe was tossed in prison on Friday.

Barton Weidlich has been in prison since Friday, when he was picked up and charged with intimidating a federal witness.

Since then, Weidlich has been held by U. S. Marshals at the Lackawanna County prison.

At a hearing Monday, Weidlich's attorney asked that the proceeding be continued until Wednesday. That means Weidlich will remain in jail at least until that time.

Weidlich came under the microscope a month ago after the feds served a search warrant on one of his Pittston businesses. County records were found. Sources say the records are the property of ex-County Manager Sam Guesto.

Weidlich had held a handful of questionable contracts with the county. Some of those agreements were terminated earlier this year.

Weidlich's family was inside the courtroom Monday. They said nothing on the way out. Staff from the U. S. Attorney's office also declined to comment.

The question remains, who was allegedly threatened by Weidlich and what did the reported threat entail? We're expecting to learn a lot more on Wednesday.
