While Pakistan mourns it's former leader, some right here in our area are doing the same. Dr. Inayat Kathio grew up in Larkana, Pakistan, where Bhutto also grew up. He shared his memories of Bhutto with WBRE news, and gave his opinion on aftermath of her assassination.
At his office in Pittston, Dr. Inyat Kathio talked about Benazir Bhutto's assassination. We asked Kathio, "what was your reaction when you heard about the news of Bhutto being assassinated?"
Kathio said, "I was very sad, then at a time I was crying. I'm over it now but if you visited me yesterday my eyes were all red. I haven't slept all night."
We asked, "what was your personal connection with Bhutto? You knew her growing up, right?"
Kathio said, "I knew her since she was a little girl. Very active, very charming, and very bold. She had an influence on you. She had charisma, you know, even if you don't know her, she would make you so comfortable."
We asked, "how do you think the country will react to the funeral proceedings today?"
Kathio said, "They are angry. They are burning government buildings on fire. And they are attacking the police stations, they are attacking the banks, and the communication railroad stations, because there's too much anger, and they feel that the government should have done more to protect her."
We asked, "how does this hurt the democratic process and stability in the middle east?"
Kathio said, "It's a setback for us. You know, we have many good leaders still in Pakistan but she was an extraordinary leader for us."
We asked, "where does Pakistan and it's people go from here?"
Kathio said, "hopefully we will go to the right path, because we would not want to give a chance to terrorists to announce that they have won."
Dr. Kathio plans to pay his respects in person. He's flying to his home country of Pakistan in early February. | |
