PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY -- Amid accusations of back-room deals and conflicts of interest, Plains Township Commissioners give a conditional green light for a new Turkey Hill at Carey Avenue and Main Street.

The meeting capped a week of tense back-and-forth between advocates and critics of the project. The new store, complete with a dozen gas pumps, would replace a smaller location a few blocks away. Commissioners called the present "triangular" location "dangerous."

Opponents of the project called foul on the three commissioners who voted to approve the project, saying the planning commission had rejected plans. Leaders were accused of "leapfrogging" the planning commission's work.

But the township's solicitor, Stephen Menn, said the final say rested with commissioners.

The plan still needs PennDOT traffic approval.
