CARBONDALE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- 16 homes and several business places were damaged by flood water and mud that ran off a mountainside along Business Route 6 in Carbondale Monday morning. It came from a mine restoration site on a mountainside above that stretch of highway.

Carbondale Mayor Justin Taylor met with State Representative Ed Staback, DEP and contractors Tuesday afternoon to see what could be done to prevent the problem in the future.

Staback says the contractor is already digging temporary trenches to divert any future runoff from the site. A main drainage ditch was included in the restoration plans. It was under construction but was not ready in time to prevent Monday's flooding.

A representative from DEP said the contractor's insurance should cover damage to those affected by the flood water and mud.
