Pocmont Resort Sale Postponed in Pike County

Pocmont Resort Sale Postponed in Pike County - Friday, April 16, 2010 at 04:02AM EST

LEHMAN TOWNSHIP, PIKE COUNTY - The future of a well-known resort in Pike County remains a mystery tonight.

The sale of the Pocmont resort was postponed during a scheduled auction Friday afternoon. That's because bidders are still trying to secure the money they need.

At the auction, we learned there are at least three individuals or companies in the running to buy Pocmont. They have not been identified. The auctioneer said some of the bidders want to keep the resort as it is...but others want to change it.

"The financing markets right now for this kind of property are very constricted," auctioneer John Cowley said.

Pocmont is a landmark resort in Pike County. It's a 160-room hotel, complete with its own banquet facilities, pools and fitness center.

The asking price is $3.5 million.

People who live near Pocmont want to see it come back to life.

"I would like to see a first-class hotel operator come in and operate this as a first-class hotel," Alan Brutten of Tamiment said. "I think this is a wonderful place with magnificent facilities in a perfect setting."

Pocmont closed suddenly in November for seasonal repairs and it never re-opened. Dozens of people were laid off.

"Whoever should be the successful bidder, we would hope that there would be job opportunities, as many as in the past, if not a few more," Lehman Township supervisor John Sivick said.

While the future of Pocmont remains in limbo, 14 acres of land right across the street may have a new owner: Lehman Township.

Supervisors agreed to purchase the land for $160,000 to keep it as open space for local homeowners. The deal will only be official if the person or company that ends up with Pocmont doesn't want the land included in the deal.

"The supervisors feel that we've got a good investment in this for the future of our residents," Sivick said.

The official sale of Pocmont could take another week or two. The auctioneer says whoever buys it should hopefully have it reopen by the summer.
