EAST STROUDSBURG - Over the years many people have complained about hospital care in the Poconos but a National Magazine says the place that heals patients has healed some of its own problems as well.

There was a time when the thought of going to Pocono Medical Center made John Kethley sick. "I had bad experiences when my mother was in here with lung cancer," he explained.

He said the staff was rude and inconsiderate while his mother suffered. He remarked, "I guess I have a little bit of resentment towards this hospital.

Kethley's friend Chris Barzev agreed. It used to be a pain to get help there.

"For instance, getting in and out of the emergency room was like hours on end," she said.

But over the years things have changed. Modern Healthcare Magazine recently named Pocono Medical Center one of the 100 most improved hospitals in the country.

"Oh. It's changed tremendously and it's a wonderful hospital," said Pearl Woodnick of East Stroudsburg.

The magazine pointed out Pocono Medical Center is now more efficient and can serve patients better with a new emergency room and cardiac center.

Barzev said, "I know it had a poor quality quite a few years ago but I think they've come a long way with trying to make improvements in the cardiology department and you know their quality of service."

Many patients agreed. Better managers and new facilities gave the medical center a healthy shot in the arm.

Kethley said, "The people are friendlier now."

John Piaggione of Chestnuthill Township added, "They were very professional and they took good care of me."

"Just the combination of their work was really good," said Monique Sanders of New York.

And officials say the hospital's future looks healthier than ever.

"I think people are feeling more comfortable coming here now than they were in the past," said Barzev.

A company called Thomson Reuters did the study that showed the improvements. Researches compared nearly three-thousand hospitals over a four year period.
